I have a serious addiction to birds and birding. Last night I discovered from Liz Gordon that the ABA have created a new web platform. It’s called Listing Central. It’s basically a place for bird junkies like me to input their bird lists…and did I say it’s Awesome? It is, it’s awesome and if you are a birder you need to be at one with Listing Central. You’ll have to join the ABA of course…you’re not a member? Bah! That’s like a gun owner not being a member of the NRA. And anyway….after inputting all my lists to Listing Central, which is Awesome, I suddenly had a very strong urge to go birding. There was one slight problem, it was midnight. Owling? That wasn’t the fix I was looking for. So after work today I took a quick walk to fishing finger #1 at Lake Lafayette Heritage Trail Park, otherwise known as Piney Z to local birders. It was an awesome 30 minutes and I am currently satisified, although writing this is giving me a strong urge to go birding again. Addicted, I know.

for some reason sparrows are often referred to, by many, as little brown jobs. Have you ever looked at a White-throated Sparrow? Gorgeous, and their song is Awesome!

Wilson’s Warblers breed here in my area and I haven’t even seen one in Washington yet and here you go getting it in Florida! I’m jealous. However, spring will come eventually and there will be lots of WIWAs here! So take that! I had this bird as a yard bird in Naples back in 2000, I think that was the year when there was a mini-invasion of them in the state.
LOL after seeing a Red-flanked Bluetail, Brambling and a shit load of owls, hawks and other OMG birds you have no room to complain mister! We’re having a min-invasion again this year Vince. There’s been a dozen or so WIWA here in Tallahassee this winter. I did not win the lottery. Will try again Saturday.
I love how getting a new listing software automatically compels one to go out birding! I bought myself a new iPhone app for Christmas, BirdLog, which allows me to input my sightings while out birding and then uploads them to eBird all in the field. I immediately had to try it out and checked some agricultural areas near my place, then discovered that it wasn’t so good when doing car-birding (as I was the only one in the car and had to keep my hands on the wheels).
I love White-throated Sparrows. Can’t wait to hear them singing in the spring! And yes, the Wilson’s Warbler is gorgeous – I managed to get that one as a yard bird last year when it visited the tree in my tiny front yard!
That’s a great yard bird! I use BirdLog as well. Pretty cool but I still use a notebook.
